UN Sustainable Development Goals: Sustainable Cities and Communities

The need for storm-resilient housing in coastal communities is growing more urgent as climate change intensifies extreme weather events. Stronger hurricanes, rising sea levels, and frequent flooding are placing millions of people at risk, particularly in regions where infrastructure is already vulnerable. Traditional building methods often fail under these conditions, leading to repeated destruction, economic loss, and long-term displacement.

Storm-resilient housing offers a practical solution. Elevated structures, reinforced materials, and improved drainage systems can significantly reduce damage from storm surges and heavy rainfall. Designing homes to withstand high winds and flooding not only protects lives but also lowers recovery costs for governments and families. In many cases, investing upfront in resilient construction is far more cost-effective than rebuilding after each disaster.

Beyond physical safety, resilient housing contributes to community stability. Families are less likely to be displaced, local economies recover more quickly, and essential services remain functional. Incorporating local knowledge with modern engineering can also ensure that solutions are culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable.

As coastal populations continue to grow, prioritizing resilient housing is no longer optional—it is a necessary step toward safeguarding communities, reducing humanitarian crises, and adapting to a rapidly changing climate.

In addition to the disaster relief work that requires building more sustainable housing, YAG’s education initiatives also come into play with our Build Back Better programs, constructing and replacing schools in coastal communities around the world.

Costa Rica

As part of Operation Jade in 2024, thanks to our donors and participating yacht crew successfully completed the construction of a much needed expansion for a local school.

Fiji

Through Operation Viti, YAG continues to support the people of Fiji helping relocate and rebuild communities that are threatened by individual storms and climate change

Antigua

As part of Operation C-Phoenix and our support of education initiatives on the island of Antigua, construction of new air conditioned classrooms continues to be of need in the area.

Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa exposed the urgent need for more sustainable, storm-resilient housing in Jamaica. With over 150,000 structures damaged and thousands left homeless, traditional construction proved highly vulnerable . Stronger, climate-adapted homes can reduce destruction, protect lives, and help communities recover faster from increasingly severe storms driven by climate change.

The Grenadines

Hurricane Beryl highlighted the urgent need for sustainable, storm-resilient housing in the Grenadines. Stronger designs, elevated structures, and durable materials can better withstand extreme winds and storm surge. Investing in resilient housing reduces rebuilding costs, protects lives, and helps island communities recover faster as powerful storms become more frequent and intense.

Mexico

Through Operation Quartz, YAG has been actively supporting the people of Mexico since our inauguration. Building classrooms, orphanages, and upgrading their systems are only a few ways that the yachting community has contributed in the area.
